CA Dirt MTB Series

Race 3 of 5

May 24, 2019

Ridin' High at the Ranch, in Susanville, CA.

Race three in California Dirt Mountain Bike Series, Cat 2 XC, 50-59, 2nd place.

All cat 2s were lined up by age and started together so after being strung out in the first 1/4 mile of singletrack there was about a mile of dirt road to try to get ahead of all the people that were able to line up ahead of me based on age and who would be obstacles to pass over the next 18 miles of singletrack. I dropped my nemesis half way up the long climb and near the end I thought I had the race in the bag when with 1/2 mile to go on the flats I was passed by a guy who must have descended like a mad man. I couldn't hang with him to the finish and lost by 12 seconds. I regret settling in behind people at times on the climbs when I should have been passing and padding my lead. Great course but way too far away. - Dave Good

“I look 4' tall. I can't blame the winner for not sticking around 2 hours for a stupid podium pic, way too long.“

Race 4 of 5

California Dirt MTB Series & State Championships. Cat 2, XC, 50-59.

3 x 4 mile laps that start and finish with a climb on a fun but tricky course, easy to overshoot corners. I decided to mark my nemesis this time for the first lap and then put the hurt on him as we climbed to the end of the first lap and see what he's got. The forest was thick so I didn't have to get too far ahead to be out of sight so the plan was demoralize him by not letting him see me no matter how hard he tried. I kept the intensity up knowing he was riding with another guy so I knew they would push each other. I was really gassed on the final climb and a little worried because I had no idea what my lead was but ended up winning by about 2 minutes :) - Dave Good

Race 5 of 5

July 7, 2019

As usual there were familiar faces and some unknowns. Three of us kept taking the lead and I was a bit concerned as I was losing ground on the approach to the final climbs, a long one followed by a short one. I bridged the gap and hung on the leaders wheel on the long one and could tell he was gassed so I made my move at the start of the short one and won by about 30 seconds.

This was the final race and my third win in the 5 race series for the USAC, XC, Cat 2, 50-59 state championships so I am officially the cat 2 state champ for my age group! -Dave Good
